Explore the compelling Persian film “Motherless” (Bi Madar), directed and written by Seyed Morteza Fatemi.

“Motherless,” a poignant drama set against the backdrop of contemporary Iran, marks Seyed Morteza Fatemi’s directorial debut in Iranian cinema. Fatemi, known for his previous work in producing popular series such as “Dark Intelligence” and “Special Circumstances,” ventures into the world of filmmaking with this independent feature.

The pre-production journey of “Motherless” commenced in late 1399, unfolding in various locations across Tehran. Following meticulous actor selection, the film’s shooting began, capturing the emotional nuances of its characters against the vibrant cityscape. The post-production phase, including editing and sound design by Mohammad Najarian, concluded in 1400, just in time for the 40th Fajr Film Festival.

In this emotional and societal drama, Seyed Morteza Fatemi paints a somber picture of the painful struggles faced by a young couple. Marjan, portrayed by Pardis Pourabedin, longs to become a mother but is hindered by physical challenges. Her path intersects with Mehrouz, played by Amir Aghaei, a man seeking funds for his son’s kidney transplant. As Marjan and her husband make a decision that intertwines their fate with Mehrouz’s, “Motherless” delves into the complexities of human relationships and the harsh realities some couples confront.

Despite polarizing reviews and criticism labeling the film as bleak, a closer examination reveals Fatemi’s sincere attempt to depict the challenges faced by contemporary couples. The director skillfully places characters from different walks of life side by side, offering a multi-perspective view of pain and suffering that resonates with the audience.

“Motherless” faced mixed reviews at the Fajr Film Festival but gained international acclaim at various film festivals:
